2010 Rules Available for Review/Comment

The preliminary rules for the 2010 CQ WPX Contest are now available for review. There are many changes to the rules so please read them carefully.  Highlights include:

IV. (e) – Defines QSO alerting assistance.

V. – Rewording of all category definitions to improve clarity.

V. C. – Overlay categories are now open to all single operator entries including Assisted.

V. D. (a) – Multi-single category is now limited to one transmitted signal at any time and 8 band changes per hour. This matches the multi-single rule for the WPX RTTY Contest. This is a major change to the definition of this category.

VI. – Multi-single stations now use a single serial number across all bands.  Only Multi-Two and Multi-Multi use serial numbers per band.

X. – Certificates will now be issued to each call area in European Russia.  Rules for minimum hours of operation to be eligible for an award were removed.

XI. – Minor clarifications to the club rules.

XII. (c) – Single band entrants are now required to include all QSOs made on all bands with their log. This is to help us with the log checking. There is no change to how the scoring is defined.

Please send any comments, questions, or suggestions to k5zd@cqwpx.com by November 25, 2009. This will give us time to review the comments and make any corrections prior to the magazine publishing deadline.

WPX Rules FAQ

Contest rules provide a framework for the event.  They try to be simple, direct, and fit within a limited page space in the magazine.  Rules are always changing and what may seem clear to the writer, isn’t always read the same way by others. This creates questions or inconsistency in how participants operate.

To help everyone understand how the WPX committee interprets the rules, we have added a WPX Rules FAQ page to the site.  Visit http://www.cqwpx.com/rules_faq.htm.

We urge all participants to read the rules and the FAQs prior to the contest.  This will help prevent any disappointment later due to misunderstanding or not taking full advantage of what the rules permit.

If you have any questions about the rules for the WPX SSB/CW contests, please contact me at k5zd@cqwpx.com.

2009 WPX Contest Rules now Available

The rules for the 2009 CQ WPX Contest are now available. See http://www.cqwpx.com/rules.htm

There are changes throughout the rules so participants are encouraged to read the complete rules carefully. Many of the changes were to align with similar rules in the CQ WW Contest or to clarify administrative details. There is no change to the scoring.

Highlights of the changes include:

  • Revised Terms of Competition specify maximum power limits, prohibition against self spotting, and entry location of remote stations.
  • Operator categories have been edited to match CQ WW format. There have been no change in the actual categories, only in the text description of each. Use of skimmer places an entrant in the assisted or multi-operator category.
  • Overlay categories (tribander/wires and rookie) have been clarified to apply only to single operator high and low power entrants.
  • The text of the club competition rule is now in alignment with the CQ WW Contest.
  • Log submission instructions now state
    • how multi-single and multi-two stations should specify which transmitter made each QSO
    • single band entrants are requested to include all contacts made on other bands
    • US stations should include the LOCATION: field in the Cabrillo header of their log
  • Disqualification criteria is now same as CQ WW Contest.
  • The entry declaration permits the submitted log to be made public.

Most of the changes are administrative and should have little impact on the competitive and fun aspects of the contest. We look forward to more sunspots and another record year of participation in the 2009 WPX contests.
